Structure of Afan Oromo I (English):

This course covers phonetics, phonetic variation, natural classes of sounds, phoneme alterations, rule systems, and prosodic phonology. It introduces major contemporary theories of phonetics and phonology, including autosegmental phonology and feature geometry. Particular focus is given to articulatory phonetics, including places and manners of articulation, phonetic transcription, the definition of phonology, phoneme identification, and syllable structure. The course also addresses phonological processes observed in the language, the relationship between phonetics and phonology, and concepts such as phone, phoneme, allophone, phonetic similarity, contrast, complementary distribution, free variation, economy, symmetrical patterning, neutralization, and goals of phonological theory, as well as different views of the phoneme.
