This course aims to introduce students the practical tools of describing, transcribing, producing English sounds, syllabifying English words and assigning stress. To this end, the course focuses on these topics: branches of phonetics, organs of speech, airstream mechanisms, the International Phonetic Alphabet, English segmental speech sounds ( English consonant sounds and vowel sounds), the concepts of phone, phoneme and allophones, discovery procedures, phonological process, natural class, distinctive features and non-distinctive feature, English suprasegmentals, English phonotactics, syllable and major applications of phonology.

This course is designed to be offered in online and face-face platforms. Hence, we employ blended lectures, presentation, independent reading, and directed private study. For the course, we use both formative and summative assessment methods. At the end of the course, a summative assessment will determine whether the learning objectives have been met. During class, the formative assessment includes a written knowledge test, home-take assignment, participation in the discussion forum, the quality of your responses to discussion questions, and a review of your submitted work.
