Aerodynamics

Explore aerodynamics principles: lift, drag, fluid dynamics, airfoil theories, and experimental techniques for mechanical and aerospace engineering.

Enrollment in this course is by invitation only

Course description:

The course will equip the students with the necessary knowledge of Aerodynamics. In particular, students will have thorough knowledge of Aerodynamic variables like Lift and Drag.  It also gives the student a proper background for the different types of two-dimensional flows like Source, Sink, Doublet and Lifting etc. It also deals with the different theories such as classical thin aero foil, D’Alembrt’s principle etc. Finally, it deals with the experimental Aerodynamics i.e measurement of pressure, velocity, temperature etc.

Course objectives

The course is   intended to:

Ø  Review the fundamental principles of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics

required to investigate the aerodynamics of airfoils, wings, and airplanes.

Ø  Recall the concepts of units and dimension and how they are applied to solving

and understanding engineering problems.

Ø  Learn about the geometric features of airfoils, wings, and airplanes and how the

names for these features are used in aerodynamics communications.

Ø  Explore the aerodynamic forces and moments that act on airfoils, wings, and

airplanes and learn how we describe these loads quantitatively in dimensional

form and as coefficients.

Learning outcomes:

After completing this course, the students will be able to:

Ø  Explain aerodynamic variables like Lift and Drag.

Ø  Estimate forces like Lift and Drag on any aero foil.

Ø  Describe fundamental concepts of fluid kinematics.

Ø  Derive different type ideal flows like Source, Sink, Doublet, Non - lifting and Lifting flows.

Ø  Solve various flow problems as mentioned above.

Ø  Explain different types of theories like Kutta – Joukowski and thin aero foil theories.

Ø  Estimate lift on various airfoils by using various airfoil theory.

Ø  Describe working of different types measuring devices such as pressure and velocity etc.
